Sookie Stackhouse Book 2 – Living Dead in Dallas
Posted by: | Comments
“Living Dead in Dallas”, the second book in the Southern Vampire Mystery series starts with Sookie, a sassy telepathic waitress working in Louisiana, finding a friend and co-worker’s body in the back seat of a car. If that isn’t enough, Sookie gets attacked while walking through the woods after having a fight with her vampire boyfriend Bill. Close to death, Sookie is taken to Fangtasia, a nightclub owned by sexy vampire Eric Northman, where her life is saved. However, in Eric’s world favors aren’t given without a price: he requests that Sookie travel to Dallas to find a missing vampire. Sookie agrees and she and Bill set off for the big city.
In Dallas we learn of a radical organization called The Fellowship of the Sun, whose mission is to “help” vampires atone for their sins. Sookie’s search for the missing vampire soon puts her on their most wanted list and that’s where the suspense and adventure begin. Sookie learns that some humans are almost as calculating and deadly as vampires. The suspense builds to a fever pitch as Sookie uses her wits and her body to fight for her life.
Amid lots of fast-paced action and adventure the romance between Sookie and Bill continues to blossom. Bill’s the perfect Southern gentleman who’s sincere feelings for Sookie are sweet and touching. He’s a great character and his relationship with Sookie is intensifies in this book. But let’s not forget hunky vampire Eric Northman who may appear cold and uncaring on the surface but clearly harbors some level of attraction for Sookie.
This book has it all: suspense, adventure, fantasy and romance. It’s also pretty darn funny. One of the last scenes in the book has Eric accompanying Sookie to an “adult” party and I have to tell you, I laughed until I cried. I’ve read that scene over and over and it never fails to amuse.
Charlaine Harris has created a wonderfully entertaining story that’s charming, clever and a joy to read. If you love well written fantasy you’ll love this book.
