Dead As A DoornailVampires, shape-shifters and werewolves, oh my! These characters continue to provide intrigue and mystery in a small, sultry Louisiana bayou town in the fifth installment in Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series. The series revolves around Sookie Stackhouse, a cocktail waitress and mere mortal who happens to have the ability to read minds. Dead As A Doornail picks up with Sookie’s brother, Jason, relishing his new existence as a were-panther after being turned against his will.

All is not well though, as a murderous sniper is terrorizing the shape-shifters residing in town. With three shifters already dead, all eyes are on Jason as the possible killer. After Sookie’s boss, Sam, a bartender and shape-shifter, is shot and wounded, she begins to investigate in an attempt to clear Jason’s name. Her efforts are not appreciated however, and in a vicious attack, her house is set on fire. Charles, a new vampire bartender on the scene, manages to rescue her. Although Jason is no longer a suspect, things are decidedly not looking up for Sookie Stackhouse.

On top of that, when the local werewolf pack leader dies the handsome werewolf Alcide, wanting his father to gain control of the pack, pulls Sookie into the battle, intending to use her mindreading powers as a weapon against his father’s opponent. Additionally, Sookie’s best friend Tara appears to be dating an abusive vampire, and a group of werewolves is investigating the sudden and mysterious disappearance of a female shape-shifter who publicly threatened Sookie’s life. With this last incident Sookie finds herself being considered the prime suspect in the disappearance.

Charlaine Harris takes these seemingly discongruous threads and weaves them into an enjoyable fantasy reading experience. Dead As A Doornail, along with the later books in the series, pulls the reader into a more complex and darkly intriguing world than the earlier installments. Harris is adept at providing enough history so new readers will not feel entirely lost, while retaining the interest of hardcore Southern Vampire Mystery fans.

As such Dead As A Doornail leaves its readers eagerly awaiting the arrival of another chapter in the lives of Bon Temps and its dark denizens.

Dead As a Doornail can be purchased from online retailers like Amazon. For an even better deal, check out the Sookie Stackhouse Box Set which includes Books 1-8. The box set is ON SALE which greatly reduces the cost of each book.

Dead To The WorldSookie Stackhouse, a waitress in Bon Temps, Louisiana with the ability to read minds, isn’t too happy about her love life. Her vampire boyfriend Bill recently betrayed her trust – a fact that almost cost both of them their lives. Sookie hasn’t forgiven Bill his transgressions and quite frankly, doesn’t know if she wants their relationship to continue. So when Bill tells her he’s going to Peru to do some research for a secret project he’s working on for the vampire queen of Louisiana, Sookie’s actually a bit relieved. She needs time to think about the future of their relationship and having Bill underfoot doesn’t help.

But her solitary status is short-lived. While driving home one night she sees Eric, the vampire responsible for monitoring and regulating vampire activity in the area, running buck naked along the side of the road. Eric, the handsome, strong, calculating and always in control vampire would never put himself in such a situation. Sookie knows something must be wrong and pulls over to help. Sure enough, Eric has totally lost his memory. He knows he’s a vampire but he doesn’t know his name nor can he remember how he got to the side of the road.

Sookie persuades Eric to accompany her home so she can get him cleaned up and solve the mystery of his strange circumstance.

And thus begins the absolute best storyline in the entire Sookie Stackhouse fantasy book series to date.

You see, Amnesiac Eric is sweet, compassionate, caring, and thoroughly lovable. He harbors no grudges, has no hidden agendas and no longer adopts a dominant alpha male persona. He’s considerate, gentle, kind hearted, and sincere. Likewise Eric can’t remember Sookie from his previous life but is soon quite taken with her. You’ll have to read the book to find out what transpires between them but know this: after this book I became a solid Team Eric fan. Bill who?

As with all books in the Southern Vampire series, Sookie has to deal with several other problems: Sookie’s brother Jason has disappeared, a coven of dark witches have moved nearby and are working black magic, and Sookie discovers a dangerous new type of shifter living near Bon Temps.

In order to locate Jason, restore Eric’s memory and rid the area of the witches Sookie will need to rely on the supernatural community for support and protection.

Dead to the World has a strong, action-packed plot with believable and likable characters. It’s mystery will keep readers engaged and the romantic elements will keep the pages turning to the very end.

Dead to the World can be purchased from my favorite store in hardcover, paperback, and ebook formats.

Club DeadSookie Stackhouse, the lovable telepathic waitress from Bon Temps, Louisiana is having relationship problems. Her vampire boyfriend Bill is lately very detached, inattentive and neglectful. So when he tells Sookie that he’s going away on a business trip to Seattle she knows he’s lying. She’s just not sure why.

Before he leaves he shows her where he’s hidden some of the computer files he’s been working on; all part of a secret project for the vampire queen of Louisiana.

Eric, the vampire head of the area where Sookie lives gives her some bad news: Bill has been summoned to Jackson, Mississippi by his master and ex-girlfriend, a female vampire named Lorena. He further tells Sookie that while in Jackson, Lorena betrayed Bill which resulted in Bill getting kidnapped. Eric can’t go searching for Bill in Mississippi since it’s outside his jurisdiction so he asks Sookie for assistance. Sookie, although hurt, agrees to Eric’s plans, thinking that she’ll deal with Bill’s cheating butt once he’s back home in Bon Temps.

Eric asks Sookie to start by visiting Club Dead, a local hangout for the supernatural community in Jackson. Eric wants Sookie to read the minds of the humans there in order to find out where Bill is being held. To protect her Eric arranges for her to team up with Bubba (a famous singer now turned vampire) and Alcide, a handsome werewolf living in the Jackson area.

In Club Dead Alcide represents a potential love interest for Sookie. The more Sookie gets to know him the more she likes what she sees. Alcide, unlike Bill, can go out with her during the day. Touching Alcide is like touching another warm-blooded human being. She can have dinner with Alcide and actually watch him injest real food.

But of course, there’s a hitch – isn’t there always? Alcide has an extremely, somewhat crazy ex-girlfriend who doesn’t appreciate Sookie spending time with Alcide. And she’s not above using physical force to get Sookie to back off.

So, Sookie’s got a psychotic ex-girlfriend on her trail, she’s got to locate and infiltrate the compound where Bill is being held, she’s got to decide where her relationship with Alcide is going, and oh, she’s got to kick Lorena’s butt for luring Bill into a trap which resulted in his abduction. This girl’s life is never easy!

This is the third installment in the Southern Vampire Mystery fantasy book series by Charlaine Harris. This book has a bit of everything: adventure, romance, suspense, betrayal, and of course, humor. Club Dead is perfect for fantasy book readers who like their vampire fiction fast-paced and full of action; it will surely appeal to both paranormal romance and urban fantasy fans alike.

Club Dead is available from online retailers in print and ebook format.
