Author: P.J. Day
Release: January 2012
Pages: Kindle
Genre: Urban Vampire

From the start King’s Blood is one of the New Vampire Books in 2012 with a story like very few you have ever read. It has a hip feel to it, one that draws you in and keeps you there. The story of Jack King is the tale of a vampire who is living in today’s world of lack of privacy, social networks and romance where the first thing you do after a date is “google” your date to be sure he isn’t a mass murderer. It is not the world Jack King was born into, but it is the one he lives in now.

Jack is just a vampire with needs like anyone else, he would like to have friends he can trust and a mate he can be in love with without having to look over his shoulder. There was a time, he tells us, when people were basically ignorant and being a vampire was an easier thing to maintain. But today, with the proliferation of vampires in books and magazines, he finds it is getting harder to maintain his cover.

In this, the first part of a series, Jack introduces himself and chats with us about how someone who has been around as long as he has (and he doesn’t really tell you just how long that is) deals with the modern world. Along the way we get to know those handful of people he has come to trust, and meet the gal he hopes will be more than a friend.

A fun departure from the usual vampire tale, with King’s Blood author P.J. Day has introduced a whole new kind of vampire. He may not be the suave vampire of Anne Rice’s world, nor does he sparkle like the latest movie vampires. But Day’s vampire holds his own; and out of all the New Vampire Books in 2012 he brings us a new way to appreciate our dark brethren.

Best Vampire Site!!

Night World, Best Vampire Books, L.J. Smith, top vampire authorsAre you a fan of L.J. Smith? You know who I mean, the gal that writes those amazing series The Vampire Diaries, Night World and quite a few others besides that. I have always enjoyed both her writing and the fact that she does such an eloquent job of it. I am always looking forward to whatever she is working on next. Well, I got curious to see how things were coming with the book I hear she is writing now, Strange Fate so I slid over to her blog to see what was up.

Man – does she ever have a great site. I really do recommend if you are a fan of hers to check it out, and most of all to sign up. She has a fabulous contest going on her site right now, you can check it all out today right here.

The Dark Valentine’s Day Contest that she is running right now will give one lucky winner a black rose (yes there are such things, I have even grown them) and an autographed copy of a book from either the Night World or Vampire Diaries books. How can you possibly beat that?

She has contests pretty often on her site, and they are always fun to be a part of. Her fans are a feisty lot, so the forum can get pretty lively at times! And of course there is her blog, which can be pretty personal and is a great way to see what is up with her work and her life. I am always amazed how much the internet has made it possible for authors, normally quiet and reserved people who sit and toil in solitude, to connect to the world out there.

So I urge you if you are a fan of her work to stop by her site. There are all kinds of great things to read like the Hecate Family Tree and things to join like the fun quiz about if you are a good witch or a bad witch. There are even pictures of her dog! So be sure to pop on by and say hello!

New Fantasy Books: The Hedgewitch Queen

Posted by: | Comments (0)

top Fantasy Books, The Hedgewitch Queen by Lilith Saintcrow, best vampire books, fantasy authorsLilith Saintcrow writes dark stories – the kind that keep you from falling asleep at night. Her characters aren’t just paranormal – they are people who are rising above pain and the confusion of life to be so much more. Her Jill Kismet series, which she has just completed, is a reflection of Saintcrow’s own life she says: including the fighting of the dark side, the need to slay demons. Her newest book, The Hedgewitch Queen promises to be just as dark.

She recently talked with USAToday about her books, her life and what she has planned for the future. The chat was lengthy and it showed a side to the author that I always suspected must be there for her to write so tellingly about struggling with the dark side of human nature. It should not have been surprising that she feels that writing has saved her life, and more than once.

But her new series sounds equally as compelling as either her YA series Strange Angels or the just completed Jill Kismet series. Saying goodbye to those characters is not easy, she says, after spending years inside their skins. But she is ready to move on, and told USAToday that she always starts a series with a clear idea of where she wants the story to go and how many books it will take to get there.

One of the things that she does particularly well in all her books are the action sequences. I wasn’t surprised to read that she actually plans them out just like a choreographer does for a film. She even told of one time when she was practicing some moves for a story in her back yard with a dummy and a haystack and a cop approached her to find out what she was doing. She had a sword in hand, and explaining she is a writer blocking out a fight scene was a difficult sell at first. So I can see why her fight scenes are so real, and have a weight to them that is so often missing in many other fantasy writers fight scenes.

If you love her last books, you might want to check out her interview about her new series The Hedgewitch Queen, which is a return to a full blown fantasy for her. The full interview can be found here and is well worth checking out.
