I love Kenyon’s paranormal romance series Dark Hunters and although this one is technically part of it, it has a very different feel to it from the rest of the series. The whole “taste” of the series started to veer slightly in the last paranormal romance in this series, Retribution, which I did review early in this blog. This one takes the next step in many ways, though I felt as though even someone who had not read one of her books in the series could read and enjoy Time UnTime.

Renegade (hey- I happen to love the name as it was the name of my old publishing company) is a half-breed in more ways than one. Born of a Greek goddess and a Mayan Chieftain, he is someone who tends to have his feet in both waters and neither at the same time. Just to complicate things, he was nursed by a Demon. Of course his father had plenty of issues with him, and his tribe and his family both treated him like dirt.

A Renegade Heart

Is it any wonder that what little self-esteem he might have has been thoroughly trashed? If there was ever someone who truly yearned for love, it is Ren. When his brother betrays and then kills him, Artemis takes pity on him and offers him The Dark Hunter Deal. Basically, if a great hero has been betrayed and killed, she hears his soul scream and offers the deal that she will make them immortal and help them get vengeance, but they are hers to fight the Demons that doom the earth, hers for eternity.

So Ren makes the deal, and we find him still on Earth all these centuries later. He is the good guy, here to protect humanity on behalf of the goddess. But there is a wrinkle coming into his life and her name is Kateri Avani.

Kateri Enters the Dream

Retribution by Sherrilyn Kenyon, paranormal romance

She is the last of her Mother’s bloodline, related to Sunshine Running Wolf. Don’t worry if that doesn’t mean anything to you, it will. She is the one who is to stop the end of the world; she just doesn’t know it yet. But she has been having strange dreams, filled with a man with long dark hair that she must help. She doesn’t know who he is or what the dreams are about, but to escape them she takes off to Las Vegas, and runs right into the man in her dreams – Ren.

I love where the paranormal romance story goes from here. Ren is obviously there to help Kateri find her true destiny, and for him to finally know love. There are just a few things in the way of it, such as the Mayan prophecy of the end of the world and the rending of the barrior between our world and the world of the demons. Little things like that. The story is rich with the myths of the Cherokee Nation and the Mayan Civilization, and for that alone I loved it.

Dark Hunter Has Much to Offer

There is a lot to dig into since this is the 22nd book in the series, but as I said I think most folks who have never read her paranormal romance series before will still be able to follow this one. Because this storyline pretty much started in the book before, Retribution, it might be a good idea to start there.

But you don’t need to feel any need to go any further back than that to appreciate Time UnTime. Though I am betting if you have not read Sherrilyn’s writing before, you may find yourself scrambling to get those earlier books. But just think, you would then have 21 amazing paranormal romances to thread through and enjoy, just because you picked up Time UnTime and fell in love with this series.
