New Vampire Books in 2012: Sacrament
By · Comments
Title: Sacrament
Author: Susan Squires
Release: January 3,, 2012
Pages: 368
Genre: Vampire Romance
This is a vampire book that really does go beyond what we normally see in one of the vampire romance books. The characters are complex and the story has twists and turns that lead you on. But best of all, the story has characters you care about, and care about long before any sexual turnings or vampire sightings happen. Sarah can’t explain it, but somehow the dark lord Davinoff does something to her that both chills her and thrills her when she meets him in sunny Sienna. But when he shows up with the deed to her ancient family home, she knows something evil is happening. But the best character by far is Sarah’s best friend, Corinne. You love to hate her, and yet she is a twisted bit of craziness that you can’t completely blame for what happens next.
In Sacrament author Susan Squires takes us on a journey that includes not only lust as well as romance, but also the dark side of friendship and a heavy dose of the gothic vampire tale that is also more at home in a Georgian romance story. This is a true delicious tale for curling up with on a dark winter night.
In Praise of Bookstores
By · CommentsI was out wandering around my new neighborhood, Vancouver, the other day and ran across the most awesome bookstore. Now – every city I have lived in (which seems to be quite a few now) has always had some kind of legendary bookstore. I have to admit that when I travel to a new city for some reason or another, I always look up what bookstores they have. But I am new to Vancouver and didn’t know they had a store that for science fiction fans is up there in the top ten lists.
It is called White Dwarf Books and for a small store it has a ton of great books. It actually has both fantasy and science fiction, and in enough depth that I had a hard time stumping the owners on books I wanted to find. I love getting stuff over the net on my kindle and all, and I would be hard pressed to review without it. But nothing really takes the place of walking into a real old fashion bookstore.
It made me realize that with the struggles that many bookstores have these days (I am amazed that White Dwarf has been around for 30 years!) publishers must be finding it harder and harder to find ways to let the readers know about a new book as it comes out. True – we book bloggers like to think we do our share, and we do, to keep readers abreast of the latest and greatest of the genres we cover. But like so many other avid readers, I always walk out of a bookstore with so many more books than I intended to get. That is because browsing is part of the experience of a bookstore, along with the experience of discovering a totally new author or title.
So perhaps from time to time I will see if I can’t do the equivalent of browsing in a bookstore here and see if I can’t introduce you to some writers or books you may not be familiar with. It is easy to just write about the top sellers and what everyone else is talking about on the web. For starters- here are a few I stumbled on that are not in the top ten list, but are books that belong on everyone’s reading list:
The Hermatica of Elysium by Annmarie Banks is an amazing story set in the time of the Inquisition in Barcelona. Yes, there is magic in it, as you will find out with a bang in the story. But more than that, there is a writing flare here that is rare in many of today’s fantasy stories. Just try reading the first few pages in the Amazon listing…you will want more. A feisty heroine whose power is knowledge, in more ways than one, this is one book worth checking out. And guess what- she is right now working on the sequel! How lucky can we be!
The Demi-Mode: Winter by Rod Rees is a story within a story. You begin at a furious pace getting caught up in the survival of our heroine. But no sooner do you feel yourself engrossed in her fate then you are flung into the “real world” and realize that what you were following was one that existed only in a computer. Welcome to a new version of cyberpunk – where lives and relationships take place at multiple levels and in many worlds. It could be confusing in another’s hands, but I found that Demi-Mode was the kind of world you want to immerse yourself into and soon it becomes second nature to breathe this unnatural air that Rees creates. If you like your SF/Fantasy a bit on the adventurous side, this may be a great place to look.
That’s my little bit of sharing for this blog. I just may take a trip down the stacks again soon and see what little tid-bits I run across to share.
Fantasy Sookie Mashup Challenge

Unless you live under a rock somewhere in the middle of a desert you may have noticed that fantasy and science fiction have really grown to have a tremendous acceptance as part of literature these days. They are certainly a lot more accepted than they were twenty or thirty years ago, or even ten years ago. But even though there are more publishers putting out genre books, in fact the romance genre sells quite well these days, there are still enough publishers out there that continue to see any kind of genre as not true literature.
But when it comes to popular culture and it’s cousin, television, our two favorite genres seem to be doing quite well. But with all the popularity of vampires and paranormal novels, and the seeming acceptance of science fiction as an accepted part of storytelling, I still think that most people can be lumped into two categories: people who read and love genre stories, and those who don’t. My family is a good example as we are all avid readers, and although we all read different genres, we do seem to all love genre fiction.
So if you love genre like the ones we cover here, you might just read some other genres as well. In fact, the same may go for writers too. How often have you read a book that is classified as fantasy and seen a cross-over with another genre? I have noticed some books when doing reviews that seem to cross over from fantasy to westerns or romance or even science fiction. The Demon Series by Diana Rowlands which I will be featuring at Best Fantasy Stories, our sister site, for the month of January is a good example of a science fiction/fantasy cross.
So even if our poster gal for fantasy, Sookie Stackhouse, isn’t in every book we feature here, I would say that she is a good example of a character that could be pivotal in other genres. So- just for fun – what kind of genre story would you put Sookie in if it were up to you? Would she fly to the moon? Would she fight dragons? Actually, she would probably be the character who inspired the guy to fly to the moon or trained the guy who fought the dragon. Let’s just have a bit of fun and see what crazy ideas we can come up with for our Sookie to be in the middle of. Love is big for her, can she love in another genre? Tell me your story idea…
