ExtraNormal is a Unique Paranormal Romance

ExtraNormal by Suze ReeseExtraNormal by Suze Reese

This is not your run of the mill young adult paranormal romance by any way you would measure it. For starters, there are no vampires or werewolves because this romance is with an alien being. Now, generally when I have seen any kind of paranormal romance that has aliens in it, the alien was a guy who wowed the earth-girl. Not here – not by a long shot. And that is what makes Suze Reese’s novel so much fun.

Because this alien is a teenage girl, sent by her planet to “blend in” with the folks on earth, watch them without really mixing in and most of all, don’t get involved with any of the males of the species. This means don’t eat the food, or make friends and most of all don’t go falling in love. So, of course being a teenage girl even if she is from another planet and has weird abilities like harnessing electro-magnetic power, she has to break all the rules.

The scenes where she experiences things like ferris wheels and cheeseburgers are wonderful. But the best thing that happens to her is Jesse, an earth boy that she can’t help but fall in love with. Despite the warnings and her discovery that there is a price to pay for having a mate in her world, she finds that he is the boy for her. He will be for you too, because Jesse is delightful and the ending of the story was so fulfilling that it made the joy of the story all the better for it.

But, of course, such tranquility never lasts forever and this is true of Elena’s life more than with most. Students are disappearing from the school and no one knows why. Soon she is suspecting every person she meets and panic has begun to spread across the school campus. She watches in horror as her friends around her fight to protect each other, often in vain.

But the worse of it all is when Elena comes to find out a secret, a secret that is deadly and that sends a shiver of shock through her very being. This week saw the mid-season announcements for some shows, including The Vampire Diaries, which has been struggling with its rating lately. Coming off the mid-season break, they were a real presence at the Saban Theatre where many shows were premiering new content for the upcoming season.

top vampire stories, The Vampire Diaries, TVD spoilers, top fantasy television

Here are a few spoilers regarding the upcoming season that just may upset the apple cart, so to speak:

Rebekah and Damon – There is going to be still more friction between these two, possibly culminating with some serious action of Rebekah’s part. Hints were thrown that Damon may finally do something to send Rebekah completely off the deep end. There have been rumors of a shirtless tortured Damon at the mercy of Rebekah.

Esther returns – Her plans to kill her children are apparently simply on the backburner and will return soon, as will Esther herself. So if you were hoping she was gone for good, not so fast.

Katherine doesn’t return – Apparently with Klaus out of the picture as far as Mystic Falls is concerned, Katherine is gone for the time being. No word on when or if she will return.

Another Big Kickoff? – There were hints that another major cast member may bite the big one this coming season as well.

The Gals are Back! – We were teased that Bonnie and Caroline are going to be more visible and that Bonnie may even have a love interest that doesn’t get killed. Wow –that would be a change for her.

Finally there was talk amongst others at PaleyFest, where this was all happening, that in the books Elena eventually makes the decision and does become a vampire. When producer Julie Plec was asked about any plans to have this happen on the show, she didn’t say yes or no – just “We will see”. That sounds to me like plans are in the works – just no script written yet.

So there you have it – lots of great stuff happening at Mystic Falls this coming season, which is just about to start up again. In fact, by the time you read this the first episode after the break may well be out. More vamps – more romance and of course more angst for us all!
