A Sizzling Vampire Romance with Once Burned
ByIf you are looking for a hot vampire romance, you couldn’t ask for a better person to deliver it than Jeaniene Frost. Her series Night Huntress has earned her some well deserved acclaim and with Once Burned she is ready to start up a new vampire series that owes a lot to the old Eastern European folktales where so much of our vampire lore began: Dracula.
But this is not the Dracula of the old black and white movies, this is Vlad. He is a hot-bodied vampire who is deadly; in fact he is the most deadly vampire around because of his ability to control the most fearsome of elements to any vampire, fire.
The Legend of the Vampires
I love that Frost has set this vampire romance in the familiar territory of the world of the Night Huntress. The vampires in this world are descendants of Cain, who was “marked” by God for killing his brother Able. It is that mark of immortality that separates vampires forever from humans and continues to condemn them. In essence, every vampire is a child of Cain who has only been able to reproduce by reducing a human to near-death by bleeding them out, and then replacing their blood with the cursed vampire blood. But no one has seen Cain or knows if he is still around and few vampires survive beyond a hundred years. That is until Vlad. He has outlived almost all other vampires and he has become a legend amongst the undead.
The Setting of a Tragic Vampire Romance
But not everyone is willing to see him continue to survive. That is where our vampire romance here begins to really take off. For his enemies have found a weakness in Vlad, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to use that weakness against him to destroy him. They find the perfect foil for this, a human with unusual abilities and weaknesses named Leila. She has had her life destroyed by the aftereffects of a car wreck that left her disfigured and changed utterly. As a result, now whenever she touches someone, she learns that person’s darkest secret. It is a curse that leaves her isolated and vulnerable. To make matters worse, she discovers she can now also channel electricity, a feat that terrifies her.
The forces that gather against Vlad kidnap Leila for they see in her an ability to create havoc for Vlad. But she must have some kind of connection to him for when they try to kidnap her in her distress she sends a telepathic call to Vlad. What was supposed to be a trap to destroy them both becomes a passionate vampire romance neither of them knows how to contain. There is a sense of Kismet between them that neither can explain nor really want to end.
But somehow they must find a way to combine their strengths and defeat the forces of darkness that would not only destroy this new found passion, but destroy them both utterly and completely. Once Burned is a dark and dangerous vampire romance as only Jeaniene Frost can deliver. I loved it from the first page to the last, and then for fun I even found this very cool book trailer that will give you a taste of what you can expect from this latest vampire romance from the Queen of Cool Ms. Frost.
Doesn’t he look just like the perfect vampire romance dark dream? Oh- and don’t call Vlad Dracula – man he really hates that name!
